NFL Mobile Web

After being selected by the NFL early in 2011 to collaborate with its mobile team on the design, development, and implementation of the Mobile Web optimized version of NFL.com, our team kicked into high-gear and managed an intensive project scope under a tight timeline – but we delivered a robust solution within budget. By the time the NFL lockout was resolved, which was just in time for the preseason kick-off, m.NFL.com had already launched in spectacular form!

Overall, the public launch of the site was a great success, with traffic and time spent on the site showing a sizable increase from the previous version within a matter of weeks. Additionally, since the site launched, Deedod has continued to provide the NFL with a customized service solution for m.NFL.com, which consists of managed hosting and IT solutions, support & maintenance, and 24/7/365 monitoring of the site.

Technical Considerations:

Given the unique mobile requirements presented by the NFL, m.NFL.com was developed with a focus on both speed and efficiency. We incorporated select speed enhancements that we believed would contribute to a dynamic integrated solution, ranging from an Akamai globally distributed CDN for static assets to a stripped down Yii Framework for faster code execution. The end result is an extremely streamlined site with close to zero overhead, which was an absolute must due to the enormous amount of traffic the NFL receives on a daily basis.

In addition to the consistent daily traffic that m.NFL.com experiences, we also had to implement a hosting infrastructure that would be more than capable of handling the enormous traffic spikes that are seen on game days. Our team accomplished this by setting up autonomous server stacks and strategically placing them in data centers around the country. In this system, users are globally distributed to the server stack that is closest to their location, which results in reduced page load times. Additionally, we implemented overflow mechanisms that shift users from stacks with less resources available to stacks with more resources available, in the event of a server stack receiving an unequal distribution of users. ***Bottom line: Deedod delivered HUGE.

At Deedod, we love the opportunity to partner with startups and entrepreneurs who have original ideas. When the founder of Datevitation approached us with his idea of bringing love coupons into the digital age we were more than happy to take part in the endeavor. Deedod's role in the project was to develop both the front and back end portions of the site. The site consists of a book builder that allows you to create your own book of custom love coupons from a selection of over 200 original date ideas. For each date selected the user is given the opportunity to provide a custom text message to accompany the date illustration, additionally users have the ability to select their own cover and provide custom introductory text to accompany the book. In addition to the book builder the site also has a method to send one off e-Dates to email and Facebook.

The project was a lot of fun as it encompassed a wide array of technologies, ranging from e-commerce to custom PDF creation for the books that are printed and bound. We look forward to our continued relationship with Datevitation. Stay tuned as there are several other projects Datevitation has lined up for the near future.

100 Layer Cake - Pop-Up Shop

Deedod's was more than happy to continue our relationship with 100 Layer Cake with the release of their hotly anticipated daily deals portion of the site known as "The Pop-Up Shop". The Pop-Up Shop consists of daily special deals relating to the wedding industry with products ranging from photography to attire to glassware and everything in between.

In order to help 100 Layer Cake jump into the daily deals market we developed a custom system that tied into the website content management system we had previously developed fro them. The system allows them to add sales and sale items on the fly as well as setup custom sale durations for each sale posted to the shop. The Pop-Up Shop features a fully real time sales / cart tracker that allows users to make purchasing decisions on sale items based on inventory sold. Most items have limited availability so users must act quick or they lose out on the deals of 40% or more off of the normal retail price.

In the end the Pop-Up shop released in mid June with a hotly anticipated first sale. For 100 Layer Cake the Pop-Up Shop produces tens of thousands of dollars in sales each month and thousands of dollars in revenue, each showing steady increase month over month.

USC Dornsife

After receiving one of the largest single educational donations in United States history from Dana and David Dornsife, the USC College of Letters, Arts, & Sciences decided to honor their donation by renaming the college USC Dornsife in their honor. As a result Deedod worked tirelessly with the USC digital media team to re-brand the college website with the new branding and name recognition.

With somewhat of a quick deadline we worked to ensure that the new branding was flawlessly distributed across the several thousand pages that encompass the USC Dornsife website. Overall the re-branding was completed in under a week to coincide with the renaming of the college and was released upon the date of the announcement.

The Daily

Deedod was excited to participate in the highly anticipated release of The Daily, the first e-newspaper designed from the ground up specifically for daily distribution on the iPad. As an agency collaboration, we partnered with Sisu to perfom the development of the marketing website for The Daily.

Since The Daily is wholly iPad based, the challenge was to create a site that mimicked the custom design of the application, while still working for devices ranging from desktop browsers to iPhones and iPads.

The end result was an HTML5/CSS3 site with custom CSS transitions with the capability to take advantage of the native iPad/iPhone hardware acceleration. The site is somewhat small with only about five sections, but we created three separate but equal sites for browser, iPad, and iPhone-size / type devices to work with the requirements for each type of viewport.

The Daily marketing site launched along with the application to much hype and fanfare. It's always fun for us to collaborate on high-exposure projects like this.

MySpace Mobile

With some 50 million unique monthly visitors MySpace is a pioneer in the social networking landscape. When Deedod was asked to partner with MySpace to re-develop the core areas of the MySpace mobile site we were all too happy to take on the challenge. We dove in head first eager and excited to implement the designs that MySpace had put together.

The new site featured HTML5/CSS3 technologies and also included functionality for swipe hand gestures in order to integrate slideshow/article swiping user interactions. Also, in a more experimental fashion we developed a page advertising experience that featured flipping tiles that covered the entire page and exposed a full page ad for users to view/click. The tile animations used CSS transitions to take advantage of native iPhone/Android hardware acceleration.

In the end the site was released with great success that included increased traffic metrics to the MySpace mobile site.
